Description:

China, late Qing/ republic period
Je 172 x 39 cm
Ink and colors on paper. Three seals of the artist: “Wuyizhai”, “Not to be common means to be guest of the immortals” (Bu su ji xian ke), “To get high aged eyebrows” (Yi… mei shou). The title label on the outside of the scrolls reads: “Screen painting of one hundred peaches” (Bai tao ping). A big tree hanging full of red peaches dominates the composition. A garden rock with peonies, narcissus and chrysanthemums completes the auspicious garden scene. A pair of deer resting underneath the tree adds to the lucky meaning of the painting. Painted in bright colors and in an extreme format the painting is a typical birthday gift presented to a high aged person wishing long life. Peaches, deer and chrysanthemums are popular symbols for expressing this wish and the seals too hint on that.
